Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (S/U) option

The S/U Option is applicable to Law and non-law Electives and Law Complementary courses within the BCL/JD Program.

The S/U Option is limited to one course in the program for a max of 4 credits.

Students are NOT permitted to choose the S/U Option for Required Courses.

Students who decide to have a course graded as Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (S/U) must do so before the Course Change deadline on Minerva (www.mcgill.ca/minerva) as part of the Student Menu > Registration Menu > Quick Add or Drop Course Sections Menu. Students cannot make any changes after the Course Change deadline even if the option was selected by mistake.

The instructor will report grades in the normal fashion. Grades of A through C are converted to “Satisfactory” (S), and grades of D, F, and J are converted to “Unsatisfactory” (U). The courses taken under the S/U option will be excluded from the grade point average (GPA) calculations, but they will be included in the attempted credits total. Credits for courses with a final grade of S will also be included in the number of credits earned.

The Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory option is not open to graduate students.

For more information, please refer to the on the main McGill Programs, Courses and University Regulations site, under Registration. Be aware that a D is a fail and translates to “Unsatisfactory” under this option.

Executive Education

Our teaching and research are also highly connected to the corporate world and the practice of management. Whether it’s short-term leadership training or a full-time master’s program, our executive education opportunities support leaders to thrive in today’s ever-evolving world. No wonder our students and alumni are a favourite among global employers.

Executive Masters

For leaders wishing to further advance their managerial skills and gain global perspectives, we offer three executive masters’ degrees: the bilingual McGill-HEC Montréal Executive MBA (EMBA); the International Masters Program for Managers (IMPM); and the International Masters for Health Leadership (IMHL).

Executive Training

The Program for Operations Excellence offers training opportunities like Lean Six Sigma Green Belt courses that are tailored to meet the needs of corporate executives and professionals. From our mini-MBAs to custom programs, the McGill Executive Institute (MEI) offers executive development seminars, training, and consulting for individuals and companies around the world.

Dare to chart your own course

In business education, as in business, what works today will not necessarily work tomorrow. There’s nothing traditional or expected about the way we have redesigned our MBA program. There can’t be if we expect our students to complete at the highest level in a rapidly changing business environment. We recognize that each one of the 80 students in our incoming MBA classes come to us with a diverse background, skillset, and vision for the future.  Our one-year and two-year program options take this diversity of need into account.

We also recognize that employers are hungry for a set of skills that most MBA programs have historically neglected to teach, like AI, financial technology, data analysis, and design thinking. When the market speaks, we listen. With new, flexible specializations, our students can personalize the content of their degrees to gain a competitive edge. In redesigning our MBA program, we have charted our own course because we expect our students to do the same.

Why we need your documentsWhat to submitWhen to submitWhere and How to submitCheck your legal status in Minerva

Why we need your legal documents

All universities in Quebec must report their students’ legal status in Canada to the Quebec Ministry of Education.

  • If you are International, you must have immigration permission to remain in Canada for the length of your registration at McGill, according to the level of your program (e.g. undergraduate, graduate, postdoctoral, etc).
  • For ALL: legal documents are required for the creation of your Quebec Permanent Code.

What to submit

To determine which legal documents we will require, select the item corresponding to whether you are a:

  • Quebec resident
  • Canadian from another province or territory
  • International student (including USA)

When to submit

Send in all your documents after you have accepted the offer of admission to McGill and before you arrive on campus. This will ensure that your student legal and tuition fee status are up-to-date.

If you are requesting a change to your legal status, for example if you are a student with Canadian status claiming Quebec residency or if you are an international student claiming an international fee exemption, please submit your legal documents as soon as possible. We cannot accept changes to your legal status after the last day of classes at the end of term, as the Quebec Government does not allow us to amend our files retroactively. Claims submitted after that date will only serve to update your status for the following term.

The semester deadlines for completing document requirements are the following:

  • Fall Session: December 01
  • Winter Session: April 01
  • Summer Session: August 01

IMPORTANT: The Student Accounts Office wants you to be aware that if your submission to update your legal and tuition fee status will not be completed before their fee payment deadline, you should request a fee deferral in order to avoid any interest or late payment charges. More detailed information on this on the Student Accounts website.

Where and How to submit

It is important that you submit your documents as soon as possible. For submission instructions, refer to the How/Where tab.Do not send us originals.

Once your documents are submitted, it normally takes us 5 to 15 working days to update your record. You can check your status in Minerva under: Student Menu>>Student Accounts Menu>>View Tuition and Legal Status

Check your Minerva status

You can review your legal status information at all times in Minerva under Student Menu>>Student Accounts Menu>>View Tuition and Legal Status.

Note that this screen defaults to the current term.

If you have accepted an offer of admission and will begin studies in a future term, you must navigate to this subsequent term to view your information. Note that your status can only be updated once proof is received. See the sections above for instructions on what, when, and how to submit your documents.

Acceptable means to demonstrate English proficiency

In many cases, McGill will accept the online or electronic version of a traditional paper test administered at a testing centre. Please check under each test name for details.

Institutional versions of the tests below are not acceptable. It is your responsibility to ensure official test results are sent to McGill.

When a test of English proficiency is required, results must come directly from the examining institution to McGill; applicants should not upload the results.

McGill’s strong preference is to receive results electronically, directly from the issuing organization, when possible.

Cambridge C2 Proficiency (formerly Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE))

Please arrange for electronic results to be sent to McGill directly by Cambridge.
Certificate awarded with a Grade C or better.
For further information: Cambridge Assessment English website

Cambridge C1 Advanced (formerly Certificate in Advanced English (CAE))

Please arrange for electronic results to be sent to McGill directly by Cambridge.
Certificate awarded with a Grade B or better.
For further information: Cambridge Assessment English website

Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL)

Overall band score of 70 or better; individual component scores of 60 or better.
Both the paper (CAEL-Paper edition) and the computer (CAEL-CE) tests are accepted.
For further information: CAEL website

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) – Academic version

The regular Academic test and the test for UKVI are both accepted. A band score of 6.5 or better; individual component scores of 6.0 or better.
The regular Academic test and the test for UKVI are both accepted.
For further information: ielts.org.

Note: McGill does not accept the IELTS Indicator test

McGill accepts only scores submitted electronically by an IELTS test center, and no longer accepts paper TRFs (Test Report Forms) from test centres and candidates. Please contact the test center where you took the IELTS test and request that your test scores be sent electronically to McGill. You can verify receipt of your results directly in Minerva; please allow an appropriate delay as McGill receives IELTS results on an ongoing basis.

Important note to applicants considering the IELTS test: We have received several reports from applicants of significantly delayed delivery of scores from various IELTs test centres.  If you choose to take the IELTS test, please allow extra time for delivery and make sure that the test centre is clear on the mechanism to send results to McGill.

Pearson Test of English – Academic

Please arrange for your electronic results to be sent to McGill directly by Pearson.
Overall score of 65 or better; individual component scores of 60 or better
For further information: PTE Academic website

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)

The following table lists the minimum acceptable TOEFL scores.

Note: Due to testing disruptions during the pandemic, McGill will exceptionally accept the TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition. Test score requirements remain the same.

Please note that, at this time, McGill does not use TOEFL’s MyBest scores.

  • Willard Boyle BSc’47, MSc’48 and PhD’50 received the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physics, an honour that he shared with his Bell Laboratories collaborators George E. Smith and Charles K. Kao. The Prize was awarded for the 1969 invention of the charged-couple device (CCD), a semiconductor circuit capable of sensing light and images and the core technology behind the digital photography revolution.
  • Val Fitch, BEng’48, DSc’87, an American nuclear physicist, was co-recipient of the 1980 Nobel Prize in Physics for a 1964 experiment that disproved the long-held theory that particle interaction should be indifferent to the direction of time.
  • David Hubel, BSc’47, MDCM’51, was co-recipient of the 1981 Nobel Prize in Medicine for his groundbreaking work on visual perception.
  • Rudolph Marcus, BSc’43, PhD’46, received the 1992 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his theory of electron transfer.
  • Endocrinologist Andrew Victor Schally, BSc’55, PhD’59, DSc’79, was the co-recipient of the 1977 Nobel Prize for Medicine for his research on hormones.
  • Ralph Steinman, BSc’63, co-recipient of the 2011 Nobel Prize in Medicine for his work in immunology and discovery of the key role dendritic cells play in immune processes
  • Jack W. Szostak, BSc’72, was co-recipient of the 2009 Nobel Prize in Medicine for discovering how the body protects the chromosomes housing vital genetic code.
  • John O’Keefe, PhD’67, was named co-winner of the 2014 Nobel Prize in medicine. Cell research by O’Keefe and a pair of Norwegian scientists has led to the discovery of the brain’s positioning system, answering the centuries-old question of how we navigate the space around us.

Astronauts

  • Current Governor General of Canada and Chief Astronaut for the Canadian Space Agency from 2000 to 2007, Julie Payette, BEng’86, DSc’03, is the second Canadian woman to have flown in space and the first to board the International Space Station.
  • David Saint-Jacques, MedResident’07, began a six-month mission aboard the International Space Station in November, 2018.
  • Jennifer Sidey-Gibbons, BEng’11 worked as an assistant professor in internal combustion engines at the Department of Engineering of the University of Cambridge and is currently training and joined the Canadian space Program in 2017.
